The Data Link Layer is responsible for taking packets from the Network Layer and formatting them into frames for transmission over the physical layer. It is responsible for transmitting the frames over the physical layer, receiving the frames, and then passing the packets up to the Network Layer. It also provides error control, such as retransmission of lost or damaged frames, flow control, such as buffering of data, and access control, such as media access control (MAC) addressing.
