The United States supported South Vietnam in an effort to contain the spread of communism and protect its strategic interests in the region. This was part of the larger strategy of containment which was adopted during the Cold War. The United States believed that if South Vietnam fell to the communists, then other nations in the region would soon follow. The United States supported South Vietnam through economic aid and military assistance in its fight against the communist North Vietnamese.
