1. Reboot your system and press “ESC” or “SHIFT” key when you see the GRUB menu.
2. Select the “Advanced options for Ubuntu” menu.
3. Select the kernel you want to boot into and press “e” key.
4. Go to the line that starts with “linux” and add “rw init=/bin/bash” at the end. (It should look like linux /boot/vmlinuz-x.x.x-xx-generic root=UUID=xxxxxx ro quiet splash rw init=/bin/bash)
5. Press “Ctrl+X” to boot into single user mode.
6. When you get the root prompt, enter “passwd root” and set your new password.
7. Reboot your system and you should be able to log in with your new password.
