Port mirroring, also known as port monitoring or network tapping, is a method of monitoring data on a local area network (LAN). It works by replicating the traffic that passes through one designated port on a switch to another port, where it can be seen by a packet sniffer. This allows a device to observe all traffic on the LAN without being connected directly to the LAN itself. This is useful for network monitoring and security auditing, as it allows administrators to detect potential malicious activity or potential vulnerabilities.
