Windows Server 2016 is a server operating system developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems, released on September 26, 2016. It is the successor to Windows Server 2012 R2, and is the server-edition of Windows 10. It is the first version of Windows Server to be based on the Windows 10 codebase, and is designed to deliver powerful new layers of security and Azure-inspired innovation for applications and infrastructure. It also provides new features such as Nano Server, Windows Server Containers, and improved storage and networking capabilities.
