Routers use a routing protocol to determine the best path. The routing protocol is a set of rules used by routers to exchange information about the network topology. The routing protocol will use parameters such as cost, hop count, and link speed to determine the best path. The router will then select the path with the lowest cost or shortest hop count as the best path.
