A network switch uses a Mac address to identify each network device connected to it and to forward data between devices. When a device sends data to another device, the switch looks at the Mac address of the sending and receiving devices to determine which port it needs to forward the data to. This allows the switch to maintain a centralized list of all Mac addresses on the network.
