A network switch is a device that forwards and filters OSI layer 2 datagrams (frames) between ports based on the MAC address in each frame. Switches generally have more ports than hubs and are often used to connect devices on a local area network (LAN).
A hub is a device that repeats the signal received from one port to all the other ports, essentially making all the devices connected to the hub part of the same network. Hubs essentially broadcast all traffic to all ports, making them less efficient than switches.
