Traceroute is a computer network diagnostic tool for displaying the route (path) and measuring transit delays of packets across an Internet Protocol (IP) network. Traceroute is used to troubleshoot network connectivity issues and to locate the source of network problems. Traceroute works by sending a series of ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) echo requests to the target destination with a varying time-to-live (TTL) value. As the packets traverse through the network, each router along the path returns an ICMP time exceeded message which contains the IP address of the router. Traceroute can then be used to map out the route the packets took to reach the destination.

Ethernet CRC (cyclic redundancy check) is a method of detecting errors in data transmission on Ethernet networks. It is a type of checksum calculation performed on data packets, which is used to detect errors in transmission. The CRC calculation is based on an algorithm that takes the data of a transmission as an input and produces a checksum as an output. The checksum is then compared to the transmitted data and if the two don’t match, an error has occurred in the transmission.

A modem is a device that provides access to the internet by converting signals from your service provider into a form your computer can understand. A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. It can connect multiple devices, such as computers and printers, to the same network, as well as allowing them to share an internet connection. Together, a modem and router provide the connection between your devices and the internet.
