In networking, a prefix is a combination of letters and/or numbers used to identify a network or a subnet. Prefixes are typically written in CIDR notation, which combines an IP address with its associated network mask. Prefixes are important in network routing and packet forwarding, as they allow routers to quickly identify the destination network of an incoming packet.
