A hardware VPN is a type of virtual private network (VPN) that uses a dedicated physical device to connect two or more computers or networks together. The hardware VPN device acts as an intermediary between the two networks, encrypting traffic and creating a secure “tunnel” between them. The hardware VPN device is responsible for authenticating users, creating secure tunnels, and encrypting data. Some hardware VPNs may also provide additional functions, such as IP address management, network monitoring and reporting, or traffic shaping.
