An ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) packet is a type of network message used for control and error–reporting purposes. ICMP packets are sent by devices (such as routers) in response to other messages sent across the network, and contain information such as error codes or diagnostics to help identify problems on the network. They can also be used to ping a remote device and see if it is responsive.
