Linux is an open–source operating system based on Unix, which was first released by Linus Torvalds in 1991. Linux was created as a free alternative to proprietary UNIX operating systems, and its open nature has since led to it becoming the most widely used OS in the world. Since its creation, Linux has been developed and maintained by a global community of developers and enthusiasts who contribute to its source code and feature additions. Today, Linux is used in many areas of computing, from smartphones and tablet devices to large web servers and supercomputers.
