A MAC address (Media Access Control address) is a unique identifier assigned to a network interface controller (NIC) for the purpose of uniquely identifying devices on a LAN (local area network). It is a 48-bit number often represented in hexadecimal format and sometimes referred to as a physical or hardware address. It is most commonly used for Ethernet networks and is also referred to as an Ethernet Hardware Address (EHA).
