A multilayer switch is a type of network switch that is capable of routing and switching at multiple layers of the OSI model. It is a combination of both a Layer 2 switch and a Layer 3 router, allowing the switch to offer the features of both devices. Multilayer switches typically offer higher performance than traditional Layer 2 switches, with more advanced features such as Quality of Service (QoS), enhanced security, and support for virtual LANs (VLANs).
