The OSI (Open System Interconnection) Model is an abstract description of a communications system that is used to describe the interactions between the different components of a network. It consists of seven layers, each of which represents a different aspect of the communication process. The layers are (from highest to lowest): Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data Link, and Physical. Each layer is responsible for a specific function and each communicates with the layer above and below it. The Application layer is responsible for end-user applications, the Presentation layer is responsible for data formatting, the Session layer is responsible for establishing and managing sessions, the Transport layer is responsible for reliable data transfer, the Network layer is responsible for routing and addressing, the Data Link layer is responsible for the physical transmission of data, and the Physical layer is responsible for the physical connection of the network.
