Spanning Tree is a network protocol that is designed to prevent Layer 2 loops in a switched network. It works by shutting down redundant links, so that only one active path remains between two network nodes. Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) is a Layer 2 protocol that runs on bridges and switches and is used to ensure a loop-free topology for any given Ethernet LAN. It uses BPDUs (bridge protocol data units) to exchange information between switches in order to determine the best path for data to travel.
