A gateway is a network node that connects two different networks together. It acts as an entry point for one network to another and is usually associated with a router, switch, or firewall. A router is a network device that forwards data packets between computer networks, creating an overlay internetwork. It is connected to two or more networks and decides which route network traffic will take based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to.
