IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) is an interior gateway protocol (IGP) developed by the ISO and is primarily used to route packets within an autonomous system, such as an enterprise network.
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) is a link-state routing protocol (LSRP) and is commonly used to distribute routing information within larger networks. OSPF is designed to scale to large networks and is used in both interior and exterior routing environments. Unlike IS-IS, OSPF is an open standard and is not proprietary.
