UDP is preferred to TCP when speed is an issue. UDP is faster than TCP, but it is unreliable. UDP is often used for streaming media or real-time communication, such as gaming and voice over IP, because of its speed and low overhead. UDP is also preferred when data is sent in small, frequent bursts, as it can be more efficient than TCP in this type of application.
