A network tap provides a higher fidelity copy of the data passing through a network, as opposed to port mirroring which may ignore certain frames or packets. Also, network taps require no configuration on the source or destination devices, while port mirroring requires the devices to be configured. Finally, network taps can be used to monitor multiple devices at the same time, while port mirroring must be configured on each device individually.
