A Mac address is associated with each port on a switch or router because the physical Ethernet port requires an individual address to uniquely identify it from the rest of the network. This allows separate devices to communicate with one another without interfering with traffic from other ports on the same device. Two Mac addresses may be associated with one port if one device connects using multiple protocols, such as both IPv4 and IPv6. In this case, each protocol would get its own Mac address.
