Education was very important to the Puritans because it was believed that in order to best serve God one must understand God‘s word and be able to interpret it. The Puritans therefore sought to educate themselves and their children so that they could understand and apply the Bible to their lives. Education was also seen as a way to create a literate and informed citizenry that could participate in the governance of the colony.
