The OSI (Open System Interconnection) Reference Model is a seven layer model that divides the architecture of a communications system into seven distinct functional layers. Its purpose is to guide vendors and developers in designing and implementing protocols to ensure compatibility between different networked systems. Each layer provides a specific set of services to the upper layers and communicates with the lower layers using well–defined interface protocol specifications. The OSI Reference Model is an open, publicly available standard and forms the basis for most contemporary networking protocols.
