A mail gateway is a system that routes incoming and outgoing email messages between different networks. It acts as an intermediary between two mail servers, and can be used to filter out spam, viruses, and other malicious content. The mail gateway will accept incoming messages, scan them for malicious content, and then forward them to the appropriate mail server. When sending outbound messages, it will do the same thing in reverse, scanning outgoing messages and then forwarding them to the intended recipient. The gateway also has the ability to reject emails that contain malicious content, or block emails from certain senders or domains.
