Train track switches, also known as turnouts, connect tracks that allow trains to change direction. When a switch is thrown, one set of rails diverts the train onto an alternate path. The rails of a switch are connected to each other with a switch rod and a switch point. The switch rod is connected to a switch stand which is what a conductor uses to manually operate the switch. The switch points move when pulled or pushed by the switch rod and can be set to different positions so that the train will change directions. When the switch points are set in one direction, the train will go straight; when they are set in the opposite direction, the train will turn.
