A network router connects two or more networks, routing data packets between them. It acts as a gateway, sending information from one network to another. It functions as an intelligent device and has the ability to select the best route for each data packet based on network conditions, such as distance and cost. A router can also provide other services, such as packet filtering, firewall protection, and data compression.
