Ping (Packet Internet Groper) is a network utility used to determine whether or not a network is reachable. It works by sending a packet of information to a designated IP address on a network and waiting for a response. The amount of time it takes for the response to come back is called the “ping time” or “round trip time”. It is a measure of how long it takes for a packet to travel from the sender to the receiver and back. Ping is used to troubleshoot network issues, test the reachability of a host and measure the response time between two systems.
