Most airplanes are equipped with a special wireless router that passengers can access. This router connects to a satellite connection, which provides a more stable connection than traditional ground-based connections. The satellite connection is usually provided by a company specializing in in-flight internet services. When a passenger connects to the router, the router authenticates the user and assigns them an IP address. The user then has access to the internet, though it is usually limited and slower than what they would experience at home.
