To identify the category of an Ethernet cable, you can use a cable tester which will give you information about the type of cable, the length, and the performance of the cable. You can also look at the color of the cable – Cat5e cables are usually blue, Cat6 are usually green, and Cat6a are typically white. Additionally, you can look at the end of the connector to see if it has a tab which indicates it is a shielded cable (Cat6a) or if it has no tab which would indicate an unshielded cable (Cat5e or Cat6).
