To launch a distributed denial–of–service (DDoS) attack, you will need to acquire a network of connected computers that can be used to send large amounts of traffic to a target server. These computers are typically compromised through malicious software and are referred to as a “botnet.” Once the botnet is setup, the attacker will use a tool such as a DDoS booter or stresser to initiate the attack. These tools allow the attacker to specify the target, the type of attack, and the rate at which the attack will be launched. This allows the attacker to control the intensity of the attack and its duration.
