1. Check the cable visually. Inspect the cable for any physical damage, such as tears or cuts, along its length.
2. Connect the Ethernet cable to a laptop or PC and a network device such as a modem or router.
3. On the laptop or PC, open up a command prompt window.
4. Type in the command “ping IP_address”, where IP_address is the IP address of the network device.
5. If the cable is working properly, the command should return a reply. If not, the cable may be faulty or there may be a problem with the network device.
6. To further test the cable, you can use a utility such as the free Network Utility app for Mac OS X, which will test the data transfer speed of the cable.
