Cisco HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol) is a proprietary protocol designed by Cisco that provides redundancy for IP networks by allowing two or more router interfaces to share a single Virtual IP address. In order to configure HSRP, one must first define the IP address of the virtual router, the priority of each router participating in the protocol and the authentication password. Once HSRP is configured, the routers will arbitrate between them to determine which will be the active router and which will be the standby router. The active router will then forward traffic to the virtual IP address while the standby router will monitor the active router, ready to take its place if it fails.
