Sequence numbers in TCP are a type of numbering system used to identify data transmissions during a TCP session. Sequence numbers are used in conjunction with acknowledgments to ensure that all data is received and transmitted correctly. The sequence number is a 32–bit integer that is incremented by the sender for each octet of data transmitted. The receiver uses the sequence numbers to detect lost and out–of–order segments and to ensure reliable in–order delivery of the data.
