      What Does Mac Address Stand For?

      MAC address stands for media access control or medium access control.

      Media access control:

      It is the network policy that determines how the data is transmitted between the two different terminals with the assistance of network cables. In the OSI model, the 2 layers of the data link layer the media access control policy involve in it. the central goals of this media access layer are,

      • Make sure there are no collisions between the transfer of packets.
      • Smooth transfer of packets between the two computer terminals.

      A collision occurred when the simultaneously two or more two terminals transfer data. a collision cause breaks down the communication which proves costly for an organization and bends heavily the data transmission.

      Methods of media access control:

      The channels through which data is transferred between nodes to avoid collision there are four ways to achieve these goals. It includes

      • Token priority
      • CSMA/ CD (carrier sense multiple access with detection).
      • Demand priority
      • CSMA/CA (carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance)

      In the OSI model:

      The OSI model (open system interconnection) is defined as it is the framework of the network that determines how data is transferred between the heterogeneous system. The second-lowest layer is the data link layer which is further divided into two sublayers,

      • LLC (the logical link layer)
      • MAC (the medium access control)

      Functions:

      • In the upper layers of the OSI model, it provides a distraction from the physical layer to the logical link layer.
      • For smooth transmission over the physical medium,  provides the encapsulated frame.
      • It settles out the addressing of the destination and source station as well as destination stations.
      • It resolves the problem of collision and if the collision occurred it stimulates the transmission.
      • It provides protection against errors which is why it provides a frame check sequence.
      • When more than one data frame is transmitted it provides multiple access solutions.
      • For transmission, it also determines the channel access methods.
