The OSPF Designated Router (DR) is responsible for managing the data link layer of the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol. The DR is elected as the master of the multi–access network, managing the communication between all nodes on the network. The DR is in charge of generating and exchanging link–state advertisements (LSAs), which are used to advertise routes to OSPF neighbors. The DR maintains the status of the entire network, flooding LSAs when changes occur.
