An Ethernet coupler, also known as a gender changer, is a device used to connect two Ethernet cables together. It is a small adapter that has two female RJ45 connectors, allowing two male RJ45 Ethernet cables to be connected together. The coupler effectively extends the length of the cables and can be used to join two Ethernet cables of the same type (e.g. Cat5e) or two different types of Ethernet cable (e.g. Cat5e and Cat6).
