HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol) is a protocol developed by Cisco that allows two or more Cisco routers to communicate and cooperate with each other so that one router (known as the active router) can take over the routing duties if the other router (known as the standby router) fails. This is done by assigning a virtual IP address to the active router, which is shared between the two routers.
