IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the latest version of the Internet Protocol (IP), the communications protocol that provides an identification and location system for computers on networks and routes traffic across the Internet. IPv6 is intended to replace IPv4, the previous version of the Internet Protocol, which is still in widespread use. IPv6 was first defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 1998, and is now the most recent version of the protocol in use. IPv6 addresses are 128 bits in length, compared to 32 bits in IPv4.
