A multicast MAC address is a special type of Media Access Control (MAC) address used by network devices to communicate with multiple devices at once using multicast transmission. It is used for applications such as streaming video and audio, or for data sent from a server to multiple clients. A multicast MAC address generally begins with the hexadecimal number 01-00-5E and is followed by the last 23 bits of the IP multicast address.
