Port security is a term generally used to describe the measures taken to protect ports, harbours and other maritime facilities from potential threats such as terrorism, theft, smuggling or illegal immigration. The term is also used to refer to the enforcement of regulations concerning port equipment, as well as the shipping and receiving of goods. The security measures employed include physical security, such as locks, guards, fences and surveillance cameras; procedural security, such as the use of manifests and ship clearance protocols; personnel security, such as background checks and identity verification; and technological security, such as software systems for managing access and communication channels.
