Routing Information Protocol (RIP) is a distance-vector routing protocol that is used to find the best path for packets to travel from source to destination on a computer network. This protocol is used on interior gateway protocols (IGPs) on small and mid-sized networks. RIP uses the hop count as its metric to determine the best path, and it is limited to networks with 15 hops or less. It broadcasts its routing table to its neighbors at periodic intervals, and it listens for updates from other routers that it can use to update its own routing table.
