A routing table is a set of rules, often viewed in table format, that is used to determine where data packets traveling over an Internet Protocol (IP) network will be directed. Each entry in a routing table consists of a destination IP address and a set of directions (known as routes) for sending data packets to the correct next hop on the network. The routing table is consulted each time a data packet needs to be forwarded.
