A subnet mask chart is a visual representation of how IP addresses are broken down into subnets. Each octet of an IP address is represented by a number from 0 to 255, and each subnet is represented by a block of eight numbers. The chart shows which octets are used for the subnet and which are used for the host address. This chart can be used to determine the number of hosts in a given subnet, as well as the range of valid IP addresses for a given subnet.
