Telnet is a network protocol used on the Internet or local area networks to provide a bidirectional interactive text–oriented communications facility using a virtual terminal connection. It was developed in the 1970s, when the number of networks and computers connected to these networks quickly grew. It allows users to log into remote computers and run programs on them. The telnet command is used to establish a connection between two computers and to send text–based commands from one computer to the other. It can also be used to connect to web servers, databases and other systems that support the Telnet protocol.
