Interior routing protocols are used to route traffic within an autonomous system, such as a single network or a local area network (LAN). These protocols include routing information protocol (RIP), open shortest path first (OSPF), and interior gateway protocols (IGP). Exterior routing protocols are used to route traffic between autonomous systems. Examples of exterior routing protocols include Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP).
