USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a specification that defines the cables, connectors and communications protocols used in a bus for connection, communication and power supply between computers, peripherals and other computers. It was developed in 1996 by a team of seven companies: Compaq, DEC, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, and Nortel. It is also widely used in consumer electronics and mobile devices, such as tablets, smartphones, digital cameras, and game consoles. USB is the primary interface for connecting external storage media, such as external hard drives and flash drives, to computers.
