A wildcard subnet mask is a type of subnet mask that is used to match one or more IP address patterns. Unlike a regular subnet mask, which specifies particular bit values to differentiate networks, the wildcard subnet mask uses a special character (the asterisk) to match any value in a specified position in the IP address. This feature makes wildcard subnet masks significantly more flexible when it comes to specifying which hosts are part of a network.
