A next generation firewall (NGFW) is a network security solution that combines a traditional firewall with additional layers of security, such as application control, user identity awareness, and intrusion prevention. NGFWs are designed to protect against sophisticated threats, such as ransomware, zero-day attacks, and advanced persistent threats. NGFWs also provide granular control over network activity, allowing administrators to set rules for specific applications, users, and devices. NGFWs are typically hardware-based, but some are available in a virtual machine (VM) form factor.
