1. Change your password: The first thing you need to do if your email address is compromised is to change your password. Make sure you use a strong, unique password that isn’t easy to guess.
2. Monitor your accounts: Regularly check your account settings and activity logs for any suspicious activity. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, contact the provider immediately.
3. Check for malware: Use antivirus software to scan your computer for any malicious programs that may have been installed.
4. Enable two–factor authentication: Many email providers allow users to enable two–factor authentication for their accounts. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a code—sent via text message or email—before anyone can access your account.
5. Use encryption: Encryption helps keep your emails secure in transit and prevents unauthorized access. Make sure your email provider supports end–to–end encryption before you send any sensitive information via email.
6. Contact the service provider: Contact the email service provider and explain what happened. They may be able to provide additional support or advice on how to protect your account.
